Henry I founded the borough, first called Newborough, after the manor came into his hands from Robert de Belesme. Newport was omitted from the Domesday Book, but this is not uncommon. Other towns omitted include London, Tamworth, Oswestry and Ludlow, all boroughs OS grid reference: SJ District of Newport. The Newport district (Welsh: Casnewydd) was one of the five local government districts of Gwent from to The district comprised the county borough of Newport and several surrounding parishes. It inherited the borough status of the former authority and was therefore styled as the Borough of : Borough.
